4 Healthy Snacks For Days On-The-Go

Let’s face it: life is crazy. Some days I can be so wrapped up in work that I don’t end up eating lunch until way past noon. I’m sure many of you can probably relate. If I have to be somewhere after work and know I won’t have time for dinner in between, I know I will start to get cranky and lightheaded (read: hangry). To combat this busy lifestyle, I make sure to always have a healthy and filling snack in my bag for days when I’m just on-the-go the whole day.

I’ve been a fan of KIND bars since college because they have wholesome ingredients, all of which you can read and pronounce. KIND has recently introduced many more flavor choices, including a few savory options. I feel like I can rely on these bars because they are sold everywhere, including Starbucks, which is great for when I’m in a pinch. Unfortunately, buying these at coffee shops all the time can get expensive, so I’ve actually starting buying whole boxes of them on Amazon, especially when I come across a flavor I really like.

I also almost always have a Ziploc baggie with me filled with raw nuts, usually almonds or walnuts. As a former vegetarian (more on that in later post…), I depended on nuts and nut butters for protein, and I still incorporate them in my diet regularly now. They’re also a bit fatty (good unsaturated fats though!), so they are filling enough to hold me over for a few hours.

I’m also a fan of dried wasabi peas and crystallized ginger not only because they are easy to pack in a baggie or small container for the day, but they both have a significant spicy kick to them. Sometimes I just want to crunch on something with a little bit more flavor before I reach for chips and cookies, etc. Anyone with me on that one?!

More recently, I’ve been turned on to dried coconut flakes. I first started using them to top açaí bowls or yogurt, but I’ve found that I really like to munch on them alone. They are the slightest bit sweet and a little oily too, so they really feel like you’re eating something with a bit of substance instead of empty calories from the vending machine – especially in the long afternoons.

Anyone else have a tried and true healthy snack for busy days on the go?

When I was working, I always used to bake a batch of seed and sultana flapjacks on a Sunday evening. The recipe is really easy to do, dead cheap and would cut into eight bars. Wrapped in clingfilm, it kept well in the fridge until Friday. I’d eat one each morning on the bus and wouldn’t get hungry again until lunchtime!

    I blogged the recipe:

The KIND bars are so delicious, I don’t eat them often. I do eat them when I am on the go at Starbucks! That’s a brilliant idea to buy them in bulk!
