Walking Around Town

IMG_1630With the Boston MBTA being what it is (i.e., unreliable and overcrowded), I find myself walking more and more. Despite the cold temps and windchill, I’ve found the benefits of walking to generally outweigh the drawbacks. I had been wasting so much time waiting for the T and then stressing out when I can’t get on a train because it’s just too packed. The fastest alternative is either hop a taxi or an Uber, but in the midst of the cold weather and recent snow storms, surge pricing is through the roof. I’ve made the mistake of just jumping in an Uber too many times – one time it cost me $45.00 to go just 2.5 miles! I was spending so much time commuting, that I hardly had enough time for other areas of my life, such as exercise. Even though walking will take longer than public transit on its best days, it is far more reliable and affordable and much less stressful! Plus, think of all the added cardio benefits of that extra exercise.

I prefer to throw on a pair of sneakers, or in this weather, my Thinsulate-lined bean boots (so toasty and warm!) and then just change when I get to my destination. Much, much better than a crowded train! I already feel more fit from the 3-6 miles I have been walking each day for the past few weeks.
