Loose curls and waves are an easy “go-to” hairstyle for the spring and summer. With the warmer weather, we spend much more time outdoors, and that means more exposure to the elements, such as wind and humidity. Easy, tousled waves are a good option for days outdoors because even when your hair gets a little messy and the curls loosen up, the style still looks very much intentional.
Spring is also a great time for a haircut. The winter months are very harsh on our hair due to the severe dryness and cold, so if you want to keep your hair healthy and strong, you’ll need to chop off those dead ends. This is especially important to do if you are trying to grow out your hair. The longer your hair gets, the more prone it is to breakage. You’ll want to make sure you trim above the damaged ends so that the damage doesn’t keep climbing up the hair strand. Fresh, clean ends are a good way to reduce that summertime frizz as well.
Recently, I popped into my local Haircuttery for a quick trim. I was feeling the need for a refresh, so I asked my stylist to take about an inch off. Fun fact: I used to hate getting my hair cut because I always wanted it to keep growing. I’d be devastated leaving the salon as a child, but my mom always told me that if I wanted my hair to grow, I had to cut it regularly. Of course, that didn’t resonate too well with 10-year-old me, but now I’m thankful for those regular trims my mom always brought me in for.
Thanks to my recent trim, I feel confident going into the warm weather months with healthy hair! Sometimes hair needs an extra pick-me-up, so I was open to trying a Redken Chemistry Shot when my stylist recommended it. The deep conditioning treatment soaked in for just a few minutes and seemed to give my hair an added boost of strength, softness and shine!
After the treatment and the haircut, I chatted with my stylist about potential blowout options. At home, I usually opt for loose waves that I get using a 1 1/4 in. wand. Although I love the look of the loose “wanded” waves, I wanted something that would last a bit longer. My stylist recommended barrel curls with a 1 in. iron. They’d be tighter than I’m used to, but we’d finger comb them out to loosen them up.
My hair is fine, so I often have trouble getting my curls to stay in all day. Even with the smaller barrel iron, my hair tends to straighten out throughout the day. Fortunately, my stylist knew all the right products to use on me, and to my surprise, my curls stayed in good shape throughout the whole weekend (I went into the salon on a Saturday morning). The Redken Iron Shape II: Thermal Holding Spray not only provided protection from the heat of the iron, but also a bit of hold. We hardly needed any hairspray at the end. I took this product home with me, and have been using it in the few weeks since. At the risk of sounding a little dramatic, this product has been life-changing (or at least has changed my hair styling routine). Keep scrolling for a few of my other favorite products.
Admittedly, this isn’t the first, nor will it be the last time I talk about my favorite hair care products. I’ve mentioned the basics for maintaining hair heath, as well as my favorite argan oil treatment. I have been called a product junkie and a product hoarder before. Anyone who has seen the inside of my bathroom cabinets and beauty drawers might think I have a a problem, but what can I say?! I love trying new products, and I think (at least I hope) that you all can gain a fringe benefit from that by getting to hear my honest reviews. And now, I have a few new and noteworthy products from Redken, that my friends at Hair Cuttery introduced me to:
No Blow Dry NBD Airy Cream: If there is one product you should come away from this post with, it would be Airy Cream. I am ALL about not blow drying my hair (or using heat in general) whenever I can. I really try to only use heat on my hair about 1x per week. For days when I just keep it natural, this No Blow Dry Cream has been a lifesaver! It doesn’t have any sort of gooey product feel once dry, and it gives me slightly beachy waves with no effort at all. Having this product in my arsenal has made my resolution to avoid the blow dryer so much easier.
Extreme Shampoo & Conditioner: This combo has quickly become a staple of my hair care routine. My hair feels softer and stronger after just a few weeks of regular use, plus it’s very shiny and workable after each use.
Extreme Mega Mask: Redken recommends using this mask after every third wash, so for me, this is about 1x per week. I like to use this especially when my hair has been through a lot, e.g., curling multiple days in a row.
Frizz Dismiss Mask: I’m all about hair masks, and trying different options. This one is a little bit more heavy duty than the Extreme Mega Mask, so I like to use this one every couple of weeks for a more intense reboot.
