There are certain articles of clothing that I reach for again and again. They are the foundation of my wardrobe and are generally the most basic and simple pieces I own. Having these items always at the ready can make throwing an outfit together in a frenzy that much easier. The basics are those that can be trusted, that fit well, and that are generally neutral. Whenever I want to buy a bold new pattern or color, I know I can rely on my basics for an appropriate paring. What to do with a bright printed skirt or pair of pants? Pair with a solid silk shell and cardigan in muted colors. Baffled by a very loud, very colorful blouse? Pair with simple black pants or dark jeans.
Some of the staples that live in my closet currently are:
1 // Cotton cardigan sweater // Always a favorite; my neutral cardigans are by far my most worn articles of clothing
~
2 // Cotton v-neck t-shirt // For layering under a cardigan; choose from a variety of solid colors
~
3 // Zip ponte leggings // I like these because they are super comfy (read: great for leisurely weekend wear) but the zipper makes them seem like more than just yoga pants
~
4 // Merino wool v-neck cardigan // Another favorite, but a little warmer than the cotton version
~
5 // Classic button down // This can 100% be worn with any outfit; a blue or white basic oxford is the best investment
~
6 // Dark wash skinny jeans // Another piece that can be paired with anything and is appropriate for most occasions
~
7 // Sleeveless popover shell // I have so many tanks like this, both patterned and solid, that I know I can always throw a cardigan over any of them and feel put-together
~
8 // Nautical long sleeve striped top // Because stripes are a must
