One of the things I love most about Boston is how walkable this city is. It’s less than a fifth of the size of New York CIty in square mileage and it’s even smaller comparably in terms of population. Fun fact: the population of Boston proper is less than 700,000, while that of NYC is over 8.5 million. I love how manageable Boston is. I went to school near the Prudential Center, and I remember as a freshman we would all refer to it as the “North Star” because no matter where we ended up if we could see the Pru, we could find our way home.
Even though Boston does have a subway (don’t even get me started on the T – I hardly take it anymore), I always feel comfortable knowing I could walk to anywhere if I needed to. I never lived more than 4 miles from my office, and on a few occasions when we had so much snow that the T actually shut down, I actually did walk the 4 miles to work. And I got my steps in!
So, as much as I love being able to walk the city, it isn’t as much fun to do so when temps are below freezing! Bundle up all you want, but I promise you still won’t last long! While we’re talking bundling, the least you can do to feel good is to be chic! Try this pink faux lambswool fluffy for…get this…$25! Lately, I’m all about fashion finds on Amazon, and this might be one that I am most proud of so far. Of course, layering it over a cozy turtleneck is a must. And don’t forget your poor fingers and ears! I bought this brand of fleece lined Alpaca mittens at a fair out in the Berkshires a few years ago, and I’ve been obsessed with Alpaca wool ever since! My boyfriend’s parents gave me this pair for Christmas, and I couldn’t love them more.
Hammitt recently sent me this crossbody, and I’ve been wearing it almost everytime I leave the apartment (other than to go to school). It’s nice and roomy so it fits all my essentials, but it’s still sleek and chic so I don’t feel like I have this giant tote on my shoulder. The best part, it’s reversible so you can use either the black side or the cognac side depending on your outfit. Personally, I like that when I have the black side showing, a few touches of the cognac leather show through. It creates a little extra dimension.
These booties. These. Booties. Need I say more? These are vying against the pink fluffy for my top Amazon find. Every time I wear them, I get so many compliments. And I can’t help but smile because they are such a good price – currently marked down almost 50%. Amazon for the win – once again. When are they taking over the world already?
And of course, no winter outing in Boston is complete without a chic way to keep your poor ears warm. When I don’t have mine covered, they turn bright red and start to burn from the cold. I never go outside without some kind of hat or earmuffs in the wintertime. How cute are these Ugg earmuffs? They are so warm – and don’t mess up your hair like a hat would. They even come in this headphone version here!
Finally, when you’ve had enough of the Boston cold, be sure to pop into a coffee shop to warm up. Lately, Bishir’s and my favorite thing to do is to pop into a nearby Tatte for a hot pot of tea to split between the two of us. We love the vanilla rooibos, and after a long study or work session, it’s the perfect break for us!
How are you making the most of the winter in your city this year?
