Amidst the abundance of lobster rolls, oysters and clam chowder for which Cape Cod is so well known is a most welcome French boulangerie and café. In its unassuming locale hidden from the main road, you’d never expect it. You’d have to know what you are looking for, but trust me, if you are in the Cape Cod area, Pain D’Avignon is a must!
For a bit of a more refined meal than your traditional Cape Cod fare, Pain D’Avignon is surely the place to go. Grab a fresh beet salad or a Croque Monsieur, and sit outside on the terrace or inside the café. Inside, you’ll get a glimpse into the inner workings of the bread-making process through a window to the bakery area. Plus, you’ll also get a peek at the vast French wine selection…I mean, does anything actually sound better?!
Before you leave, you absolutely must pick up a loaf of freshly baked bread for the road. Bread is a staple in so many of our diets, and has been a major component in the diets of cultures all over the world for centuries. Despite our reliance on bread, high quality and artisanal varieties are often hard to come by! Fortunately, the bakery distributes to restaurants and shops throughout the Boston area and New England. I actually saw a Pain D’Avignon truck in the city recently, and you bet I followed it as long as I could to see where it was heading 🙂 Verdict: I lost it somewhere near the North End!
Those of you exploring Cape Cod this summer: do you have any other hidden favorites?
