These delicate, yet rich little treats have been a family tradition for as long as I can remember. This is my grandmother’s recipe, and she always made these tea cookies for us around this time of year. Today, we carry this tradition forward and my mom or my aunt or I still make them during the holidays! The recipe is simple, and there really isn’t too much work involved to whip up a batch. To make these even more special, I wanted to add a little more glam (for a possible New Year’s Eve treat), so I’ve dusted these with edible gold glitter dust. I think these cookies have become all the more enchanting.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar (plus more for dusting)
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/4 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup finely chopped walnuts
edible glitter dust

INSTRUCTIONS

Beat the softened butter, sugar and vanilla until creamy. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour and salt. Combine the dry mixture with the butter mixture, and add the nuts last. The trick here is to mix until evenly combined without going overboard. This keeps the cookies light. You actually want them to crumble a little when you bite into them.

Chill the dough in the refrigerator for 10 minutes. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Roll the dough into 1 inch balls and place onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are just ever so slightly golden (these cookies do not change much in appearance while in the oven). Roll in confectioner’s sugar, and let cool on a wire rack. Roll in sugar again, and sprinkle with gold dust.

Happy baking!
