End of Summer Blues

Outfit Inspiration

I have a secret…I did not pick out this outfit. In my effort to open up this blog a bit more to my personal life, I’ll have to share the story behind this particular look. My birthday recently passed, and my boyfriend, knowing my taste (in that I can be quite particular sometimes) was stumped for what to get me this year. He usually picks out the most thoughtful gifts, usually really practical ones, or something I may have mentioned I liked just one time…he’s really good like that. But….believe it or not, he actually picked out this dress…AND this cardigan…AND this necklace.

My Style

Needless to say, getting me an outfit was a pretty risky move in his mind, but you can probably imagine that I loved it. I would probably define my style as refined, fairly classic and quite feminine. I love simple looks that have a single pop of color or a bold statement piece or two, and this look has it all. I’ve long been drawn to blue hues. After pink (and lilac shades, of course), I gravitate to all shades of blue. Ever since I was young, I would always notice that I got the most compliments on my outfits whenever I was wearing either light blue or a true royal blue. Maybe it is due to my blue eyes, but I’ve always felt that the color just worked for me.

The Details

Dress: J.Crew | Cardigan: J.Crew | Necklace: J.Crew | Shoes: Soludos | Bag: Botkier | Lips: Clinique

At first I thought the dress was a little too short for me. I’m 5 feet 8 1/2 inches, and although I know that isn’t super tall, it sure feels that way sometimes! The rule in high school was always that the hem of your skirt needed to reach your fingertips with your arms down by your side, but I’ve found I prefer dresses a little longer than that. This dress juuuust meets that rule, but I love it anyway. I wore this look out to dinner in Lenox while visiting the Berkshires (you might’ve already seen it if you follow along on Instagram @thelilacpress) last weekend.

What do you guys think about this hem length and blue hue?

Haha I’m glad you understand! Sometimes my favorite dresses feel just a teeeny bit too short 🙂
