Having been unable to make it to the nearby bakery this past Friday for National Doughnut Day, I will admit that I was quite disappointed. To make up for it, however, a trip to Blackbird Doughnuts in the South End was in order this weekend. These doughnuts are hands-down the BEST in Boston. Doughnuts are all they do day in and day out, so you know LOTS of dedication and thoughtfulness go directly into these decadent and fluffy little pillows. There isn’t even a place to sit and eat them (besides a couple of benches outside), so really all they are doing is turning out doughnuts nonstop.
The flavor selection consists of a mix of classic and unusual, sweet and savory options. We chose raspberry dark chocolate, birthday cake, Boston cream, and blackberry lavender.
This blackberry lavender doughnut is my favorite – the glaze is light and fruity and the dried lavender bits sprinkled on top allow for a very fragrant experience that balances out the sweetness. These doughnuts are the real deal. I’m a strong believer in that if I’m going to eat the many (I actually don’t even want know how many) calories in a doughnut, I want the real thing – with good ingredients and not some mass produced version with chemicals and preservatives, like you’d find at a local Dunkin Donuts.
I couldn’t resist a quick bite of the birthday cake doughnut as well – such a classic and oh so delicious. Yum!
I love your description of donuts – “fluffy little pillows” is kindof spectacular. I’ve never been to Blackbird Doughnuts but heard nothing but good things. That blackberry lavender looks delicious. Happy Belated National Donut Day! 🙂
Thanks – there really is no other way to describe them – they are just so amazing!
