Apple Picking in the Berkshires

Apple Picking

Apple picking is one of my favorite pastimes! I always loved school field trips to the orchard, or visits with my family and friends! Something about fresh apples, crisp air, sweet cider doughnuts and hot apple cider just can’t be beat! It is such a festive fall activity and I just can’t resist chomping on a few juicy apples as we scour the rows of trees for the best fruit. One of my favorite events of the year is a local fair, called the Lenox Apple Squeeze. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it this year due to other commitments. However, we found a great way to make up for it by visiting Hilltop Orchards & Furnace Brook Winery in the Berkshires the following weekend! The sprawling property is so beautiful; there was even a fall wedding happening the day we visited!

The Winery

We got lucky with lots of apples left on the trees. Now that it is starting to get a bit chilly outside, I was really glad to be wrapped up in cozy layers! After picking (and eating) as many apples as we could, we went back inside for the most delicious cider doughnuts – right out of the fryer. I’m telling you – they may not be very healthy – but these puppies were worth it!

The property is also home to a winery. There were lots of wines and hard ciders to try, but what the winery is  known best for is their apple ice wine. We tried sips of them all in a cozy alcove by the fire! It was the perfect way to warm up and wind down.

I love bundling up in layers in the fall and winter months. It really is no fun to be cold. Although I am a huge fan of fall, this season also brings the anticipation of the cold winter months ahead. Quite frankly, I am just not prepared for another brutal winter here in New England.

For now, I plan to stay cozied up in lots of sweaters!
