Recently, I learned a little bit more about my family history. It is so interesting to think about how our ancestors lived their lives and that it would affect how each one of us came to be today. Apparently, my great great great (yes, that was three “greats”) grandfather, Captain Alfred Sorensen brought the eight massive granite pillars that surround the altar at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine from the quarry in Vinalhaven, ME to NYC at the turn of the century. Each columns is actually two pieces, and it took three trips to transport them all. This ancestor of mine led such an interesting life – my aunt even started a Facebook page to help connect all of Capt. Sorensen’s descendants, so we can learn more!
Since I was up on the Upper West Side this past weekend, I popped into the cathedral. Those granite pillars are truly immense. I didn’t quite comprehend just how great a feat it was to transport these pillars…until I saw them for myself. The pillars, and the gorgeous church that houses them, are humbling to take in and think about what it took to build such a structure so many years ago.
fleece lined turtleneck dress // fur pom hat (similar here, here and here) // tech gloves // tights // booties (similar here and here) // crossbody bag
This turtleneck dress is beyond cozy. The light fleece lining makes this a perfect go-to piece for a winter day. I stumbled across it while perusing my favorite website, and for under $50, I just couldn’t pass it up. In the wintertime I find myself wearing lots of turtlenecks. As a kid I was never a fan of them because I thought they felt suffocating around my neck; however, now I find there is nothing better than extra warmth around my neck. I’ve only had this dress for a little over a week, but I’ve already worn it more than I care to admit! It was perfect to wear during the day while exploring NYC!
Anyone else a major fan of turtlenecks in these freezing temperatures?

Those granite pillars look huge, I can’t imagine how much work that is but go your ancestor. You look as gorgeous as always here too! x
