This transitional period between winter and spring is the toughest for me. I find it hard to stay active. During the winter months, we have the beautiful snowy mountains at our disposal for skiing. As much as I love skiing for the physical activity, I also just can’t get enough of those breathtaking snowy views from the top of the mountains.
Fortunately, we were able to squeeze in one last ski trip to Vermont the weekend before last with friends to get some last minute shredding in before the snow melts for good. Little did we know that there would be yet another storm after that… New England, you always keep us guessing.
Now that April is here and the temperatures do feel like they are rising, I’m going to need a new way to stay in shape. Visiting my boyfriend out in the Berkshires means lots of hiking, which I love! The only problem is that this time of year can still be quite chilly and is also guaranteed to be quite muddy. Bean boots are a must.
Truth be told, the ice is just starting to melt too, so it’s still a little slippery out there. Since I don’t belong to a gym, I’ve come up with a few ways (that I’m really trying to stick with) to stay in shape:
ONE // Hiking
This one is the easiest! Just grab a buddy (or go alone to soak in some quiet time) and head to your nearest trail. If you have a hilly terrain nearby, this can be harder than you might think and therefore a surprisingly great workout!
TWO // BBG
There has been lots of buzz about Kayla Itsine’s Bikini Body Guide in recent years, and I finally downloaded the app myself! It is super easy to stay on track and the workouts are all 28 minutes – I think I can spare time for that. Plus, if you do belong to a gym, this is a great program to help you stay focused.
THREE // Hot Yoga
I’ve been doing hot yoga for ages (I love Baptiste here in Boston), but sometimes I get out of the habit since it can be a little pricey and each class is a full 90 minutes, which can take a solid chunk out of the day when you consider travel time and showering. But with the dreary weather, hot yoga is a welcome treat, so I say now is the time to splurge and invest in yourself. Plus, with bikini season just around the corner, you won’t regret it.
FOUR // Spinning
There is a never ending supply of cycling studios popping up everywhere. I love a structured, motivational and inspirational class, and I always leave spinning feeling high on endorphins. My favorites are Soul Cycle, Recycle Studio and The Handlebar here in Boston.

What are your favorite ways to stay active during the New England thaw?

Spin classes are my absolute favorite! They always kick your butt in the best way! Such great tips!!
Rosy Outlook
This transitional weather is not my favorite, I admit, but just like you, I try to stay active in anticipation of summer (yay!) 🙂 I love a good spin class or even yoga sometimes – anything that can give me a boost of energy! xo
